Leadership: Going to a place called nowhere

  • By Mark
  • In General Nonprofit, Leadership

Leadership is less about the final destination and more about the never-ending journey. I just got back from giving a training to a wonderful group of students and AmeriCorps members at the University of Texas at Brownsville. What I was taught again on this trip was that leading your life and career is much less about the final destination and more about how the journey helps to uncover and develop your authentic self. For many of us that are on this journey to become the best soul possible and to impact as many people as possible, it can feel as though we get lost or what I call “stuck a place called nowhere” when we are trying to create new content or ideas. One reason we can feel lost or stuck is we don’t always have a clear road map to follow because we are uncovering a new path. The growth and stretching of you is a key ingredient to sustainable success. A powerful thought on this topic from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi book Flow is often the best moments in a person’s life are when the mind or body is stretched to the outer edges to accomplish something extraordinary. As leaders and top performers we know we have to keep leading and iterating to continue to grow and be masters in our industries. The action item to help you uncover more of your leadership is to write down your #1 Hair Raising Audacious Goal for this year. Get clear and focused like a laser beam on that goal and be sure the goal get’s you fired up and motivated. This will help you transition with grace through those uncertain times of change or when you visit the “place called nowhere” temporarily. Be bold, be patient, and above all stay focused on your goal that helps you to shatter your boundaries for the never-ending journey of impact and personal mastery.

Before I was two years old, three nonprofits changed my life forever; two adoption agencies in different countries and one hospital that helped me walk for the first time. When I was growing up in Massachusetts, my father worked as an artist and my mother ran an international adoption agency out of our home. You could say, quite literally, I was raised in a nonprofit. As a result of this rather unusual yet highly rewarding upbringing, I was instilled with a strong sense of giving back from an early age. During my sophomore year at the University of Massachusetts, I had a harrowing brush with death during a school break. Once again a nonprofit (hospital) came to my rescue, and the memory of this life changing event has deepened my commitment to serve others through the world of service and social impact. In 2000 I began working as a recruiter for nonprofit organizations, first in New York City, then in Washington, DC. In 2008 I founded Jobs In Nonprofits and the Nonprofit Career Coach with the goal of “connecting the brightest hearts and minds with the best nonprofits.” We are dedicated to serving idealistic, responsible job seekers who want to have a positive impact serving nonprofit organizations . The Nonprofit Career Coach provides strategic one-on-one career coaching, mentoring, speaking, workshops and training to job seekers who want help to accelerate their nonprofit career.
