Develop Focus

Focus will make you a genius at the things you love to do. Little Miguel (my son) loves the children’s show called Caillou. This is his favorite show hands down. We rarely go a day without him watching one episode. He often learns new words watching the show. Miguel will get into a state of mind and he really…really wants to watch his show. He will keep repeating Caillou, Caillou please, or take you by the hand over to the TV until we turn it on. When the show starts he lets out a big yell full of joy…”HEY, CAILLOUUU!” This got me thinking about the profound power of childlike focus.

Have you ever met a world-class CEO that was not focused on the bottom line of the business. How many professional athletes do you know that are legendary at multiple sports? My question for you is what is your top focus in life today? Is it to live a healthier life or be the best husband or wife, parent or employee? I like to think of focus as a laser beam. The more you focus on your top goal, the more power you have to break through obstacles during the journey to living an amazing life. A quote from Robin Sharma’s book The Greatness Guide is “Focus plus daily improvement plus time equals genius.” The right focus and improvement over the years can actually lead you to genius. What a powerful point, that anyone can be a genius with this simple formula. You can take your life leadership to the next level of extraordinary by being a master of your focus. So focus every day on that one thing that will make you a genius at the things you love to do the most.

Before I was two years old, three nonprofits changed my life forever; two adoption agencies in different countries and one hospital that helped me walk for the first time. When I was growing up in Massachusetts, my father worked as an artist and my mother ran an international adoption agency out of our home. You could say, quite literally, I was raised in a nonprofit. As a result of this rather unusual yet highly rewarding upbringing, I was instilled with a strong sense of giving back from an early age. During my sophomore year at the University of Massachusetts, I had a harrowing brush with death during a school break. Once again a nonprofit (hospital) came to my rescue, and the memory of this life changing event has deepened my commitment to serve others through the world of service and social impact. In 2000 I began working as a recruiter for nonprofit organizations, first in New York City, then in Washington, DC. In 2008 I founded Jobs In Nonprofits and the Nonprofit Career Coach with the goal of “connecting the brightest hearts and minds with the best nonprofits.” We are dedicated to serving idealistic, responsible job seekers who want to have a positive impact serving nonprofit organizations . The Nonprofit Career Coach provides strategic one-on-one career coaching, mentoring, speaking, workshops and training to job seekers who want help to accelerate their nonprofit career.
