Magic Mentors
Magic Mentors
When Miguel (my son) was born, I started telling people that I was now a life-long mentor. Since writing my book on I now say I am a life-long mentor and men-tee. Who has been a great mentor in your life? Who would be your ideal mentor today? The magical thing about mentoring is that the little things can make all the difference over time. It is not a big moment of transformation, but the little magical moments over time that stack up and produce direction, connection, guidance and support and have a profound impact on you. It is often said that when you teach once you learn twice. I have certainly found that to be the case in my experience with my coaching and home life. When I am coaching someone to focus on their true purpose in life, it reminds me to stay true and focused on my mission in life. When I am telling Miguel to be patient that we need to eat before we go to the park, it reminds me to be patient when my wife Caterine is telling me a story from her day and I want to jump in with my own story. Mentoring is not a one-size fits all kind of scenario. I would recommend you look for and develop three to five mentor relationships with people who are younger and older than you, or of a different ethnicity and gender. The more perspectives you can learn from the better. Sometimes a mentor is helpful to guide you as to what not to do as much as they are there to guide you on what to do. Remember that relationships are the heart of life. The stronger and more connected you are, the happier and more confident you will feel. Mentoring can be magical, as long as you are open and honest! Cultivating relationship always helps to enrich your leadership.
